“Sustainable development” has become a trend around the world, especially old buildings which have been renovated and restored as brand-new hotels, consequently become the luxurious and unique landmarks.
Harlingen Lighthouse, Netherlands
It would be a romantic experience to become the protagonists in novels with your lover. Stay in the lighthouse of Netherlands and overlook the endless ocean while making a lifetime promise!
About 1 km from Amsterdam, the Harlingen lighthouse has only a room for two. The hotel was reconstructed from a real lighthouse designed by architect C.Jelsma and came into service in 1920. It was an important part of the Dutch coastal lighting network. Due to the recent adjustment of the lighting systems alongside the coast, this lighthouse was no longer needed from 1988. In order to preserve the landmark building for sustainable development, the Dutch authority invited designers to refurbish the lighthouse and it become a creative hotel.
As a hotel converted from the lighthouse, it does not entail five-star luxurious and exclusive facilities. Nevertheless, you could enjoy the ultimate privacy and stunning view. There are three stories: the first floor is the bathing area, the second floor is the living area with a comfortable bed and working space, the top floor brings you to the place from where the light once shined so brightly. You can stand outside and glance over the sea with the panoramic terrace. Designed in a modern style, the hotel features a small but comfortable space with specially-designed furniture. Besides, a dedicated lighthouse manager will provide the services according to your need. You may really need the blessing from Cupid in addition to great patience since it may take 7 to 9 months to book in advance to this unique lighthouse hotel.
Tai O Heritage Hotel, Hong Kong
Old Tai O Police Station’s restoration came in 2009, when Hong Kong Heritage Conservation Foundation Limited was selected to undertake its revitalisation. This involved its conversion into a 9-room boutique hotel, the Tai O Heritage Hotel. In 2010, it was graded as a Grade II historic building by the Antiquities Advisory Board. The hotel was officially opened in 2012.
Tai O Heritage Hotel has spared no expense in restoring the original beauty of the Old Tai O Police Station. Consisting a two-storey main building, a two-storey outhouse and a one-storey extension – the Old Tai O Police Station is a characteristic example of colonial-style architecture. In order to maintain its late 19th century character, every historical element and detail, such as the cannons, searchlight, corner turrets, dry-goods store and cells distinctive to the former police station, has been restored and refurbished in the Tai O Heritage Hotel. It is classically understated and elegant with a mix of colonial architectural elements such as a Chinese tiled roof, wooden casement windows, granite steps, French windows, and so forth. Additional details such as the arched façade, fireplaces, and connecting bridge between the main building and the outhouse all distinguish the Hotel’s architectural style as belonging to the early 20th century.
Two suite rooms are named after the Hong Kong Police Force Navy ranks, namely “The Commissioner” and “The Commander”, while two others are named as the navvy vessels“Sea Horse” and “Sea Lion”. Others are named after the significant attractions in Tai O, such as “Eagle’s Point”, “General’s Rock” and “Deer Lake”. Tai O Lookout, the glass-roofed restaurant situated on the first floor of the Hotel, with panoramic view of the South China Sea, is named after the guard tower where the marine police were stationed to guard against pirate activities. The rooftop is now transformed into the restaurant with colonial-time decor, housing the wood-carved furniture previously belonging to China Tee Club.

Masseria il Tabacchificio, Italy
