Skydiving is widely available. However, many people choose Australia because of its breathtaking scenery. From the panorama of the islands on the way down to Mission Beach to the bird’s-eye view of the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns, it is a truly invaluable experience.

Starting on the plane, the coach started talking to everyone for making them relax. A sense of chilliness seeped in as the plane reached above 10,000 feet. The plane door opened and participants jumped out one by one. It was both thrilling and nerve-racking.

Wind filled the mouth and deafened the ears as the participants free fell. After a while, one could finally open the eyes to look at the amazing scenery, embrace the world and open the heart to the absolute freedom. It is important to scream, in order to release all the accumulated stress and suppressed emotions and avoid dizziness upon reaching ground.

Albeit the short free-falling time, the experience will stay with the participants forever. Start embracing the beauty of life only when you overcome the greatest fears.
Then, soon after jumping off the plane horizontally, the coach launched the parachute, naturally turning people’s bodies vertical. At the same time, the coach might start teaching how to turn and control the speed. The serene scenery on the ground marked the end of the trip. After all the excitement, the tranquillity came with an extra layer of meaning.

Further Information on Skydiving

1. 17 areas and 37 companies in Australia offering skydiving experiences. Most of them are on the coastal states, such as Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and Victoria.

2. There are three options of height—6,000 feet, 12,000 feet and 14,000 feet.

Different height involves different free-falling time, from 15 seconds to one minute. Participants can hire a professional photographer at an additional cost.

3. Apart from planes, some companies offer jumping from helicopters. A helicopter can only reach 12,000 feet at its maximum. This option has only become available in recent years at selected places.

Hang gliding is another extreme sport in Australia if skydiving is not challenging enough. In a triangular structure, participants fly through clouds and take bird’s-eye views of Australia’s best landscapes.

Hang gliding depends a lot on gears and external factors, especially the weather such as the wind speed and direction. On the day of flying, participants are advised to reconfirm with the company that the weather condition is suitable. In the events of unexpected weather changes, theactivity will be suspended and participants have to wait for the weatherto be better for hang gliding; hence, it is wise to leave more time. In somecases, it could be cancelled due to the poor weather condition.

One upside is that participants are not required to have a gliding licence nor previous experience for the 90-minute flight. First-timers will be accompanied by a coach, who will control the speed and height during the flight, and perform the landing. The launching by foot in the first few seconds could be scary, but as soon as the feet go off ground, the experience becomes delightful.

While skydiving only goes vertically down, hang gliding allows one to control the direction by changing the body’s centre of mass. The flight lasts 25 to 30 minutes and features a panorama of the eastern coast line and the national parks. It is a dream-come-true experience to fly in the sky.
