10 – 18 Dec
The Whirling Dervishes Festival held in Konya, Turkey, attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year. It is a religious and cultural event dedicated to Rumi, a saint who advocates love, tolerance and acceptance, and recommends the rotating dance as an important cultivation method of the Islamic Sufi sect in 13th century. Followers will wear long white dresses, wearing brown and yellow high hats, spinning in place, swinging skirts, high-handed hands, turning into a meditation state, praying and communicating with God. Nowadays, more and more non-Islamic people will also carry out the Sufi whirling and regard it as a meditation activity for self-spiritual improvement.
