“Anything can become art for the pursuit of perfection,” says a film. For Raymond Wong, toy collection is his hobby, profession and career. He does not stop at perfection, but works to promote and pass on the art. Toy is not only for kids.
For Wong, toy collection is more than a hobby or job, but a two-decadeold dream coming true. Now a veteran vintage toy collector, he said, “I sold cars for a living 20 years ago. I have always had a strong interest in cars. Whenever I had some spare money, I spent them on toy cars. Gradually I realised that there is some potential in toys. That is how I started collecting toys.” He added that the search for toys was particularly exciting and interesting. He learnt a lot about the history of the toys as well. “My original intention of collecting toys was for my own satisfaction. I wanted to play with them. That has never changed. Business and investment values are secondary. I acquire toys through two main
channels. First I would see if local collectors are selling, and then I would visit vintage toy shops, exhibitions and websites. Sometimes I would even fly to Japan to look for the pieces I am looking for.”
Wong’s previous career in Japanese car sales definitely has a role to play in his large toy car collection. He said every piece in his collection is over 30 years old and they are all modelled after real cars. Each of them has been driven on Hong Kong roads and is an important part of his memory. The interaction makes those cars valuable to him. “Cars made in Japan, such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi, form the majority of my collection. Most of them are sports cars. That is where my passion lies.” He has also set some interesting selling rules. “I only sell when there is an extra piece of the same model in the shop. Customers can also buy a whole series and then I will go and collect another series. If a piece is missing from a series, it will be very difficult to find a replacement. I would feel sad to sell an individual piece as well.”
Kingdom of Happiness
For Wong, the relationship between people and toys is intriguing. People always want
to acquire things that they have interacted with when they are young. These can be cartoon characters or things that form part of their daily lives. Toys bring people back to those happy childhood memories. Although Wong now owns a toy kingdom that spans over 10,000 sq. ft., toys for him are still about dreams and passion. “Apart from conducting businesses, I also host gatherings and exhibitions for toy collectors. Through these events, I hope to pass on the happy memories that toys have given me.” Time may have changed, but people’s love for toys stay the same. The toys in Wong’s collection must have given him plenty of unforgettable stories.
