Royalty and nobles often have several holiday residences. These are not just a symbol of status, but thoroughly embody different lifestyles and tastes. In Southeast Asia, Genting Highlands in Malaysia and Sentosa in Singapore are perfect destinations for a royal-luxurious holiday.
Golfing in the Clouds
Genting Highlands, at over 1,800m above sea level, offers the perfect escape from the sweltering tropical heat. Also known as “Monte Carlo of the South”, it is reachable by helicopter, where one could take directly from the airport. This option allows travellers to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the mountain. For thrill-seekers, the glass-bottomed cable car is the way to go. Upon arriving, one would be mesmerised by the splendid scenery, but there are more to do. For golf enthusiasts, the Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort is definitely not to be missed. The par-71 golf course with 18 holes is situated at 1,100m above sea level, offering a rare experience of golfing in the clouds.
Snow in the Tropics
The temperature on Genting Highlands is about 10°C lower than at the foot of the mountain. While it is not cold enough for it to snow naturally,Snow World on the second floor of First World Plaza makes it up by creating a European inspired space with life-like snowfalls. The temperature at Snow World is maintained at -6°C and jackets are provided for visitors.
There are many other entertainment facilities on the mountain, from malls and games centre to bowling alleys. Adventurists can go onto the outdoor roller coaster and drop tower. One can also ride a horse or take a walk along the mountain trails. There is never a boring day on Genting Highlands.
Antique Sailing Ship, Dinner by Sea
If Genting Highlands was a palace on the mountain, then Sentosa in Singapore would be a castle by the sea. Sentosa is a small island in southern Singapore. From a humble fishing village, it has grown to be a world-class resort area with luxury hotels and a wide range of facilities. A major attraction at Sentosa is Royal Albatross, a passenger-carrying tall ship with four masts and 22 sails. The ship, one of the some 150 of its kind and one of the very few still in service, represents a throwback to the golden ages of sailing. As unset view on Royal Albatross makes a unique experience, best followed by a delicious dinner by the bay.
Dining with the Sharks
Sentosa is home to many Michelin restaurants. Modern European restaurant CURATE, helmed by Michelin-starred chefs, is one of them. Another example is TEPPAN by Chef Yonemura, which spices up Japanese teppanyaki with French elements. However, the most special of all is Ocean Restaurant—the destination of Southeast Asia’s only underwater aquarium dining experience. Guests can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine while watching manta rays and sharks swim by. It is surely an unforgettable experience.
After dinner, it is time for some adventure. Sentosa’s is home to beautiful beaches and a magnificent underwater world. Wading, snorkelling and Sea Trek are some popular activities. For a more thrilling experience, there are plenty of water activities, such as surfing, canoeing and riding on a watercraft. After a long day, a spa treatment at one of the nearby hotels, a visit to the Universal Studio, or walking around the Trick Eye Museum will surely help you unwind.
