 成熟質感

38歲是男士的盛年,事業有成有望更上一層樓,但放諸汽車界,38年畢竟已令人有徐徐老去之態。誠然,能歷盡多年風雨受歡迎程度不減,外型始終如一,說的是越野性能超強頑的奔驰G-Class。1979年推出至今,車子持守了多個堅持,如四方起角的硬朗外型與堅固耐用的零件,換來了車迷的口碑及實質的支持,近年G-Class的銷量不但沒有因為「年紀」漸大而下跌,反而不斷攀升,估計今年的升幅將高達20%,為38年之最。

G-Class除為新一代系列私家車化,更新增一款電油偈G500型號,搭載5.4公升V8引擎,可輸出387匹馬力,轉數低於2,800轉更可全數釋出530 Nm峰值扭力。雖然扭力不及柴油版強勁,但力量反應快,加上轉向、油門等操控感覺偏向原始紮實,唯有自己擁有,才明白為何對它如此鍾情。

Age 38 is the peak of most gentlemen, but for the automobile industry it feels like a millennium. Some exceptions, for example the ultimate off-roader – Mercedes Benz G-Class. Originally designed in 1979 as a military vehicle, the boxy robust styling, handmade with precision, the body works stick to the original 1979 design, over all these years the number of sale rockets to a 20% increase, marking the 38 years of the branch.

As the G-Class became more civilised, G500 with a 5.4 litre petrol V8 engine producing 387 bph and can produce a staggering 530 Nm with a low 2,800 rpm. Although the torque figure are not as impressive as the diesel power, the petrol version are more nimble and agile.

那些年越野情

走過68個年頭,英國一代越野名車陸虎的衛士於2016年宣告停產。不說不知,衛士盛載了不少殖民時代的回憶,因為它的前身Series車系,曾是英軍和香港皇家警察等政府部門的專用車。

方正的外型、古樸的風格,加上在車尾及側面上明顯的點焊痕跡,更讓我們覺得衛士的率性,對其加深了好感。從乘用車的角度來看,這種施工後沒有修飾的狀況,本來是不能忍受的,可是衛士毫不遮掩地呈現在大家的面前。像是門框的焊縫、鈑件的點焊等等,除了上漆之外,跟本完全沒有任何裝飾,原封不動的表現在乘客面前。

還記得那些年,筆者開著衛士開往斜斜的沙丘上橫衝直撞,它強大的越野能力,將抓地力的問題全部拋諸腦後,享受從沒試過的盡興。若僅想以一般的SUV車來推想衛士在越野環境下的表現,可說是以管窺天。當人們喜歡的豪華內裝、氛圍云云,對於越野而言都是長物,都是增加重量、浪費資源的小東西,成就越野霸業的衛士不拘這些小節,只帶給大家精純粹煉後的越野能力。

In 2016, the last Land Rover Defender rolled off the 68-year production line. Series III the predecessor of the Defender is one of the most iconic vehicles in the colonial era, which has been serving as British Marine vehicles and Royal Hong Kong Police cars.

Boxy style, exposed welding joints, it is robust and functional as an English worker. Unlike other luxurious Land Rovers, Defender is a blue collar vehicle with little to none trimming to the weldings, body panels and the only finishing are just being painted, not even decorated in the interior.

Remember the good old days, rocketing through the desert in a Defender reveals the thrill of invincibility. Modern SUVs are stuffed with luxuries, more accessories mean heavier. Weight is a big issue when tackling speed or rough terrain, how often will you take the luxury SUV into the wild? Off-road capability seems more than just an occasion,Defender is designed not only for pavement but to survive anywhere on earth.

美式霸氣

說到具代表性的越野名驅,當然不能不說來自美國的悍馬,車子是根據美國陸軍使用的高機動性多用途車輛改造而成。自上市以來依靠本身優異的機動性和越野性,讓其擁有「越野之王」的美譽!

1999年,被美國通用汽車購入,同時開始生產悍馬 H1車型,H1車型仍是以對應美軍的軍事用途需求所打造,雖然擁有相當強悍的機動性及越野性能,卻並不適合一般人;到了2003年,悍馬接著推出了H2車型,有別於H1車型濃郁的軍事用途氣息,不僅將車身體積縮小,更增添了不少舒適性配件,讓H2更貼近大眾。悍馬車系在波斯灣戰爭中頻頻亮相,更在不少荷李活電影中出現,成為美國軍隊的象徵,好像無論男女老幼都認識這車,再加上H1在2006便停產了,所以在現時來說倒是十分矜貴。

Bought by the General Motors in 1999, the production of H1 started,which is identical to the current Military version. The track is immensely wide, therefore it’s hard to manoeuvre in urban car parks. In 2003 the brand introduced the H2, which is more civilised and air conditioner was added. Humvee (The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) appears often on the news and Hollywood movies, it has become an icon of Uncle Sam. H1’s production line sadly stopped in 2006, so it is even rarer nowadays.
